Setup Canon PixMa iP1880 in OpenSuse / Linux

April 22, 2008

Today, I successfully configured the printer Canon PixMa IP1880 on OpenSuse 10.3 system. I setup the said printer to  OpenSuse because I want to share it to 50 computers attached to this server. I tried to install it using the YAST and select from the list of printer drivers but it does not work so I tried to look for drivers over the internet and find it on Canon’s website. Here’s the following steps I have done to configure properly the printer to work on OpenSuse 10.3 (the source of this instruction is from the guide provided by Canon).

  1. First, I downloaded the printer driver in RPM. I downloaded two RPM: cnijfilter-ip1800series-2.70-1.i386.rpm and cnijfilter-common-2.70-1.i386.rpm.
  2. These two RPM requires GTK & libxml to be used properly, so you need to install it through YAST. (Im using KDE, i think if you are using GNOME these files are already installed).
  3. After that, I connect the printer to the CPU then I install the driver using the following commands in the terminal window:
    • [root@zzz /yyy]# rpm -ivh cnijfilter-common-2.70-x.i386.rpm
    •  [root@zzz /yyy]# rpm -ivh cnijfilter-ip1800series-2.70-x.i386.rpm
    • [root@zzz /yyy]# /etc/init.d/cups restart                                                    // note: you need to restart cups before registering your printer.
    • [root@zzz /yyy]# /usr/sbin/lpadmin -p IP1800 -m canonip1800.ppd -v cnij_usb:/dev/usb/lp0 -E                        //register the printer to the spooler
    • [root@zzz /yyy]# /usr/sbin/lpadmin -d IP1800                                          // set the default printer
  4. After this, I share this printer to 50 computers by configuring SAMBA. Before I can use the Canon printer on Windows XP clients, it requires the Windows XP printer driver to be installed and everything is done! Hope this help you with configuring your printers to be used in OpenSuse 10.3.
