Usually a gray login screen (XDM login screen) displays after a re-installation or repairing an installation of SUSE (or maybe corruption of KDM which requires you to reinstall it).
To fix this problem and to go back to the nice KDM login screen, login as ROOT on the current gray login screen then LEFT CLICK on the screen and select XTERM. From the terminal window type startkde to start the KDE then go to YAST then click on System ->etc/sysconfig Editor ->Desktop->Display Manager->DISPLAY MANAGER setting (as shown below). Change the setting of the DISPLAY MANAGER from XDM to KDM, then click Finish. Reboot the system and the original KDM login manager will be displayed and gray login screen will disappear. Good luck!
